Qi2 vs MagSafe Explained

MagSafe is Apple's proprietary magnetic wireless charging system, introduced with iPhone 12 in 2020. It uses a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil to align the charger perfectly, enabling faster charging speeds and magnetic accessory attachment.

Qi2 is an open standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) that adopts the same Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) as MagSafe. This means Qi2-certified devices work with MagSafe chargers and vice versa. The key difference is that Qi2 is open to all manufacturers, while MagSafe is Apple-exclusive.

How to Add MagSafe to Non-MagSafe Phones

Even if your phone is not on the MagSafe list above, you have several options to add magnetic functionality:

Magnetic Ring Adapters

A thin metal ring with magnets that sticks to the back of your phone or case. Works with MagSafe mounts, wallets, and chargers (if your phone supports wireless charging). Costs under $10.

MagSafe-Compatible Cases

Phone cases with built-in MagSafe magnets. Available for most popular Android phones. Provides the strongest magnetic connection and full MagSafe accessory compatibility.

MagSafe Car Mounts

Magnetic car mounts work with any phone that has a ring adapter or MagSafe case. The magnets hold the phone securely while driving, and some mounts also charge wirelessly.

MagSafe Battery Packs

Magnetic battery packs snap to the back of your phone. With a ring adapter, even non-MagSafe phones can use these for portable power (wired charging only, unless the phone supports Qi).

Frequently Asked Questions

Which phones have MagSafe?

24 phones in our database have built-in MagSafe. This is primarily iPhones from the iPhone 12 onward. MagSafe provides magnetic alignment for chargers, wallets, mounts, and cases at speeds up to 25W on the latest models.

What is the difference between MagSafe and Qi2?

MagSafe is Apple's proprietary system. Qi2 is an open standard based on the same magnetic technology. Qi2 devices work with MagSafe chargers. We track 9 phones with Qi2 (that do not also have MagSafe) and 9 Android phones with Qi2 support.

Do any Android phones support MagSafe?

No Android phone has Apple's MagSafe hardware, but 9 Android phones in our database support Qi2, which is compatible with MagSafe chargers. You can also add MagSafe to any Android phone with a magnetic ring adapter or MagSafe-compatible case.

Can I add MagSafe to a phone that does not support it?

Yes. Magnetic ring adapters (under $10) or MagSafe-compatible cases add magnetic alignment to any phone. If your phone has wireless charging, it will charge through the adapter. If not, you can still use magnetic mounts and wallets.

How many phones support wireless charging?

Out of 171 phones we track, 112 support some form of wireless charging (24 MagSafe, 9 Qi2, 79 standard Qi). 59 phones have no wireless charging.
