Action Button vs Mute Switch: Why iPhone 15 Cases Don't Fit iPhone 16
By WillItSnap Team · March 2026
The iPhone 16 replaced the physical mute toggle with a programmable Action Button. Different cutout shapes mean cases aren't interchangeable despite identical body dimensions.
Which iPhones Have Which?
| iPhone | Left Side Control | Camera Control (Right) |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 14 & older | Mute Switch (toggle) | None |
| iPhone 15 | Mute Switch (toggle) | None |
| iPhone 15 Pro / Pro Max | Action Button | None |
| iPhone 16 (all models) | Action Button | Yes |
| iPhone 17 (all models) | Action Button | Yes |
Why This Breaks Case Compatibility
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 have identical body dimensions (147.6 × 71.6 × 7.8 mm). But a case designed for one won't fit the other because:
- The mute switch needs a slot cutout (for the toggle to slide)
- The Action Button needs a button cover (for press input)
- iPhone 16 has a Camera Control button on the right side that iPhone 15 doesn't have at all
